Most of the media focus today was on statements given by Sen. Cory Booker and Rep. John Lewis, both Democrats, at Sessions' confirmation hearing. The media attention rarely points out that neither Booker nor Lewis even know Jeff Sessions well enough to form an opinion. Their opposition is based solely on what they think of Donald Trump.
On the other hand, one of the witnesses at Sessions' confirmation hearing today was William Smith, the first African-American Republican chief counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Smith was hired by Jeff Sessions. “After 20 years of knowing Sen. Sessions I have not seen the slightest evidence of racism because it does not exist,” he said. Two other African-American colleagues of Sessions spoke at the hearing in support of him. Mainstream media reports, however, focused on Booker and Lewis, and not on those individuals who actually know and have worked with him.
Here is video of Smith's testimony before the committee today.
Despite the opposition, Sessions is likely to be approved as attorney general.
